LINCOLN — Nebraska Appleseed is the latest recipient of the generosity of MacKenzie Scott, receiving a $1 million donation from the co-founder of Amazon and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos.

Scott, who is also an award-winning author, has pledged to give away most of the wealth she had accumulated.

As of March, Scott had donated more than $17 billion to charities and nonprofits, according to Quartz.com. Most of the gifts are dedicated to racial and gender equality, LGBTQ+ equality, democracy and climate change

In a press release, Appleseed said it received one of Scott’s Yield Giving donations out of more than 6,500 applicants.

The awards recognize organizations that “advance the voices and opportunities of individuals, families, and groups that have experienced discrimination and other systemic obstacles, and organizations making positive change by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues.”

Founded in 1996, the nonprofit Nebraska Appleseed, based in Lincoln, advocates for economic justice, immigrants, child welfare and access to health care.

“Yield Giving’s award is an amazing acknowledgment of Nebraska Appleseed’s track record of impact,” said Appleseed Executive Director Becky Gould.

“This contribution will advance Appleseed’s continued advocacy in the years ahead as we work to elevate community voices and needs,” she said.
