Hornady explosion occurred while mixing primer compound

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office has found that an explosion at Hornady Manufacturing near Grand Island occurred during the mixing process of the primer compound and was determined to be an accident.

Adriana Alvarez, a 32-year-old employee from Grand Island was pronounced deceased at the scene, as a result of the explosion. Two additional employees were injured in the explosion, one self-transported and one taken by ambulance. Both injured employees were treated and released the same day.

It was reported at 9:57 am Friday at the facility located at the site of the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition plan. The Cairo Fire Department initially responded and determined the explosion occurred in a what is called the PVE West Building. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency conducted the investigation.

Hornady manufactures a wide array of bullets and ammunition.

Also responding to the scene were Alda Fire Department, Wood River Fire Department, Grand Island Rural Fire Department, Grand Island Fire Department, Hall County Attorney’s Office and Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
