WSC Baseball sweeps Doubleheader from Minot State

Wayne State Baseball team swept the Minot State Beavers Saturday in Wayne. Wayne State moves to 17-7 on the season with a 12-2 record in the NSIC while Minot State falls to 8-17 on the season with a 5-10 record in the NSIC.
 
GAME ONE: WAYNE STATE 9 MINOT STATE 2

Wayne State would come out hot offensively to open the game scoring five runs on six hits in the first inning. Carter Thomas would first get on base after a single through the right side. Next was Colin Lynam who recorded an RBI single through the right side to put WSC up 1-0. Catcher Trey Wells would tack on a single along with an RBI from Quinn McCafferty. He was followed up with another RBI single, this time from Kaden Young. Designated hitter Nick Barnett would record an RBI double down the left field line putting the Wildcats up 4-0. Braden Cannon would also record an RBI to put the ‘Cats up 5-0 after one. In the second, Thomas would score following a Colin Lynam double to right center bringing the Wildcat lead up to 6-0. McCafferty would extend the lead to 7-0 following an RBI triple that brough home Colin Lynam. WSC would add one more run in the fourth after a McCafferty RBI single out to shallow left field. The Beavers would score their first run in the sixth to cut into the Wildcat lead at 8-1. In the seventh, each team would score one run to make the final score 9-2 in favor of WSC.

Wildcats would score nine runs on 15 hits with no errors in the win while the Beavers scored two runs on six hits with one error in the loss.

Colin Lynam would go 3-3 from the plate with two RBIs, while scoring three runs. Carter Thomas would go 3-4 from the plate scoring two runs and stole two bases. Nathan Anderson would pitch all seven innings for the Wildcats throwing 98 pitches (65 strikes). Anderson also produced six strikeouts in the win.
 
GAME TWO: WAYNE STATE 13 MINOT STATE 7

Wildcats would score their first run of the second game following a fielding error from the Beavers that brought home Young to make it 1-0 ‘Cats. Minot State would tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning following a double from Colton Bagshaw. Minot State would take the lead 2-1 following an RBI from Seugjun Song. Wildcats would tie up the game in the third with a McCafferty RBI bunt that brough home second baseman Chase Douglas. Wayne State would have a big fourth inning scoring six runs on six hits while Minot State committed four errors. Cannon would open the inning getting on base with a triple. Cade Lynam would single up the middle giving WSC the lead 3-2. Thomas would then get an RBI double would score on a Beaver error. Douglas would bring Thomas home with a single out to centerfield to make it 5-2 WSC. Wells would also single out to left field that brought home Douglas making it 6-2. Cannon would bat for a second time in the inning bring two runners home putting WSC up 8-2. Minot State would bring in a pair of runners in the bottom half of the inning cutting into the Wildcat lead at 8-4. McCafferty would bring in two runs following a double in the fifth bring the score up to 10-4. Cannon would get another RBI following a single making it 11-4 ‘Cats. In the seventh, Cam Madsen would steal second which would allow Wells to score on the throw over to second making it 12-4 ‘Cats. Minot State would strike back in the top half of the inning hitting a home run out to right center making it 12-5 Wayne State. The Beavers would score a pair in the eighth inning to cut into the Wildcat lead at 12-7. Wildcats would extend the lead in the ninth following an RBI single from Madsen. WSC would go on to win the game 13-7.

Wildcats would score 13 runs on 15 hits with one error in the win while the Beavers scored seven runs on 12 hits and seven errors in the loss.

Wells would lead WSC at the plate going 3-5 while scoring four times. Cannon would also go 3-4 with three RBIs in the win. McCafferty would also add three RBIs for the ‘Cats. Eli Crnkovich would pick up the win in relief for the ‘Cats bringing his record to 2-0 on the year. Kolt Davis started the game for WSC pitching 3.2 innings and produced four strikeouts. Kadyn Van Hill and Cannon also pitched in relief for Wayne State.

Wayne State is scheduled to play at Minnesota Duluth in a four-game NSIC series Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Duluth, Minnesota (weather permitting).
