UNO Softball falls to SDSU, beats Kansas City to advance to Summit League Tournament Championship Game

The Omaha Mavericks are championship-bound for the fourth straight season. The Mavericks were faced with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in game one where they fell 2-1, sending them to the elimination game against Kansas City. Omaha pulled through with a 2-0 shutout to advance them to the championship game against SDSU. 

With SDSU not having lost a game yet, the Mavericks are slated with two games against the Jackrabbits Saturday. 

The Mavericks improved to a 39-13 overall record and are now 13-10 in the Summit League tournament. 

Game One: Omaha 1, South Dakota State 2 
How It Happened

    – Omaha recorded their first hit from an Ava Rongisch double to right field in the top of the second.
    – In the bottom of the second inning, Kamryn Meyer recorded her third strikeout on a 0-3 count to hit 1000 career strikeouts.
    – SDSU went through the third without a hit. In the bottom of the fourth, Osmundson was hit by a pitch to put her on first. Carrillo then hit a home run to right field putting the Jackrabbits up 2-0.
    – Rongisch responded with a leadoff home run down the right-field line to make it 2-1 in the top of the fifth.
    – In the bottom of the sixth SDSU had a runner on third with two outs left. Marra Cramer caught a shallow pop-up in center field. With the runner trying to advance home, Cramer connected a throw with Sydney Ross to tag her out at home.
    – The Mavericks were held without a hit for the remaining two innings to close the game 2-1. 

Game Notes
    – Rongisch and Cramer picked up two hits each. 
    – Meyer pitched six innings where she retired six batters with only one walk and four hits. 
    – Her longest victory streak in the country of 18 came to a close with her fourth loss of the season, putting her at a 23-4 season record. 
    – Meyer recorded her 1,000th career strikeout and then some.

Game One: Omaha 2, Kansas City 0 
How It Happened

    – During Sydney Ross’s at-bat, Maggie O’Brien and Lynsey Tucker were waiting on first and second. Ross battled at the plate with a 3-2 count and two outs until she made contact, blasting one deep to center field. The center fielder dropped the catch sending Tucker and O’Brien home for Omaha’s two runs in the bottom of the first. 
    – In the top of the third, O’Brien and Tucker had three straight clutch plays to make it a three-up, three-down inning. 
    – Sydney Nuismer ended the game with a changeup to strike out the final Roo batter securing the shutout and win to advance.
