UNO Softball beats South Dakota State in series finale

The Omaha Mavericks won the series against the Summit League Champions, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, with a 7-4 victory on Saturday afternoon. 

The Mavericks ended the regular season with a 37-12 overall record, 14-4 conference record, and went 12-2 at home. The Mavericks dominated Summit League play going 7-0 in conference series victories. This team and the 2013 team are the only two Omaha Softball teams in the D1 era to win every series in a season.

How It Happened

    – Sydney Thomason put the Mavericks on the board in the first innings with a double to left center to score Lynsey Tucker
    – Alex Olson put the Mavericks up by two with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Maggie O’Brien from third. 
    – The final run in the first inning came from Ava Rongisch who had a sacrifice hit to second to score Thomason. 
    – SDSU hit a two-run homer to center field in the top of the second to make it 3-2. 
    – Tucker responded with a two-run home run to right center to put Omaha up 5-2 in the bottom of the second. 
    – Rongisch hit a two-RBI single then advanced to second after Olson and Thomason scored making it 7-2. 
    – SDSU notched two more runs in the third to make it 7-4. 
    – In the top of the seventh, SDSU had two runners on base with two outs when Kamryn Meyer entered the game. Meyer, in true fashion, struck the batter out in four pitches to grab the save and secure the win for the Mavericks. 

Game Notes
    – Sydney Nuismer picked up her 12th victory of the season with 5.1 innings of work. Nuismer threw seven strikeouts and allowed eight hits and four runs.
    – Kamryn Meyer notched her fourth save of the season. 
    – Tucker went 2-2 at-bat with two RBIs and two runs. The second baseman also made two putouts and tallied one assist.
    – Ava Rongsich went 1-3 and tallied three RBIs. 
    – Despite winning by three, SDSU outhit Omaha 9-6. 

On Deck
The Mavericks will head to Brookings, SD to compete in the Summit League Tournament this week.
