Northeast Volleyball goes undefeated at Siouxland Invitational

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Northeast Community College volleyball team made the short trip to Sioux City, Iowa to participate in two games Friday and two matches Saturday as part of the Siouxland Invitational. The Hawks came out on top in all four contests by final scores of 3-1, 3-0, 3-0 and 3-0.

Northeast (7-2) battled No. 17 North Dakota State College of Science Friday morning and dropped the first set before taking the final three to secure their first win over a ranked opponent this season. Mya Hedstrom (O’Neill, Neb.) once again led the Hawks in kills with 16 as Daveigh Munter-McAfee (Wakefield, Neb.) wasn’t too far behind with 11 of her own. Northeast made quick work of fellow Region 11 member Iowa Lakes Community College in the afternoon showdown as Brooklyn Wiese‘s (Loomis, Neb.) three ace serves helped contribute to the sweep.

On Saturday, the Hawks battled Ellsworth Community College in the first match of the day and Shaylyn Safranek (Merna, Neb.) was all over the floor for Northeast in their 3-0 victory as she contributed 10 kills, seven ace serves and 17 assists. The Hawks did not drop a single set on Day 2 of the tournament as Jayden Bestenlehner‘s (Omaha, Neb.) 14 digs combined with Katy Jones‘ (Hartington, Neb.) 13 digs were part of completing the perfect day in the sweep of Lake Region State College – ND.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Schultze on what clicked in Friday’s victories:

“We played together really well today,” Schultze said. “I had a lot of freshmen out there. They stepped up and did a nice job for us.”

Schultze on the weekend as a whole:

“It was great to go 4-0,” Schultze said. “We blocked well again today, which really helps our back row defense.”

Schultze on what the focus will be before taking on Kirkwood Wednesday:

“We have to fix the small unforced errors,” Schultze said. “We need to continue to serve aggressively while keeping those serves in play.”

UP NEXT:

The Hawks will return home for their conference opener and will host No. 9 Kirkwood Community College at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
