April 4th, 2024 | Northeast Athletics

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team hosted their home opener Thursday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk in a doubleheader with No. 9 Des Moines Area Community College. The Bears took both ballgames by final scores of 9-0.

Northeast (3-18) was able to finally compete in front of their home fans against the national-ranked DMACC squad on what was a warm day at the park. The Hawks struggled to reach base in the showdowns, but a bright spot came in the form of Amanda Quintana-Gonzales (Denver, Colo.) as the sophomore tossed four innings and only allowed one earned run in relief during Game 2. Northeast will now turn their focus to four more conference matchups this weekend at home.

STAT SHEET GAME 1:

Malika Monroe (Valentine, Neb.): 1-2

Talia Bandt (Grand Island, Neb.): 0-1, BB

STAT SHEET GAME 2:

Malika Monroe (Valentine, Neb.): 1-1, BB

Lauren Lucero (Berthoud, Colo.): 0-1, BB

Amanda Quintana-Gonzales (Denver, Colo.) 4 IP, 4 H, ER, BB

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Softball Coach Erin Sharpe on the day as a whole:

“There were times that we had small improvements, and that’s what we need to focus on,” Sharpe said. “We need to be a little more aggressive at the plate and take advantage of ‘easy outs’ when they are given to us on defense.”

Sharpe on the weekend ahead:

“I’m happy to be home for the weekend and having familiar faces around will make it easier for the girls,” Sharpe said.

UP NEXT:

The Hawks will be back at home this weekend and will take on North Iowa Area Community College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
