On Tuesday afternoon the Stanton County Sheriff’s office clocked a speeding vehicle on Hwy 275 near Pilger going nearly double the posted speed limit of 65 mph. Eric McPherson, 52, of Norfolk was stopped for allegedly driving 124 mph in the 65-mph zone. The area that he was stopped is a two-lane highway with a narrow bridge over the Humbug Creek. McPherson was given the speeding citation for the only offense possible, as Nebraska law does not allow drivers to be cited for offenses such as Reckless Driving based only on speeding alone. Efforts to have that law requirement changed by law enforcement over the years has been met with resistance from the Nebraska legislature and opposition from the anti-law enforcement lobby. Many states make high speed driving a more serious charge, such as Reckless Driving and even make such offenses arrestable on the spot, “At those speeds your only a millisecond from catastrophic crashes that can’t be called an accident and that often kill the innocent”. “It’s just another example of the uphill battle law enforcement fights every day in a broken criminal justice system”.
