A new ballot measure would ban slaughterhouses in the city and county of Denver.
Pro-Animal Future is a political group that has introduced the measure. The group is opposed to the harvesting of animals and argues that the slaughterhouse odors are a “nuisance” to nearby neighborhoods.
“There’s multiple signs from the proponents of this bill that this is just their testing ground,” Colorado Cattleman’s Association Executive Vice President Erin Spaur said. “And if it’s passed or successful they’re going to try to take it state-wide and nation-wide as well.”
If Denver’s ballot measure is approved by voters in November, it could cost Colorado’s economy up to $861 million and impact nearly 3,000 jobs, according to a Colorado State University Regional Economic Development study.
