National Finals Breakaway Roping payout to grow by $50,000

The sport of breakaway roping is growing, and this year, so is the payout of the National Finals Breakaway Roping.

The top 15 breakaway ropers in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association standings will have the opportunity to compete for $50,000 more in prize money at the 2024 NFBR as compared to last year. With the boost, the payout of the NFBR will equal $300,000.

The growth in the payout is reflective of the growth of the sport itself, which was featured at 50 professional rodeos in 2019, and 500 rodeos during the 2024 season. Past data from PROCOM, ProRodeo’s entry system suggests that approximately 40% of all entries come from the two ladies events: barrel racing and breakaway roping.

“We are always excited to see growth in our Association and this is a great step forward for our breakaway roping membership,” said WPRA President, Jimmie Munroe. “We encourage all the fans to come out and support these ladies. This will be our third year at the South Point and last year produced three of the fastest times in the history of the NFBR with 1.7-second runs, so you can expect to see lightning-fast times from the best breakaway ropers in the world competing for a world championship.”

Still a relatively new event, the NFBR has crowned just four World Champions: Jackie Crawford (2020), Sawyer Gilbert (2021), Martha Angelone (2022), and Shelby Boisjoli-Meged (2023).

The NFBR will take place December 3-4, 2024, with five rounds of competition each day, totaling 10 runs. The event will be hosted at South Point Arena & Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
