SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – The women’s volleyball team showed again that it can play with the conference’s top teams as it stole a set from the Dordt Defenders in wednesday’s 3-1 loss. The Mustangs competed with their hosts throughout the match, falling 25-21, 25-16, 19-25, and 25-20.

Morningside’s success was fueled by a defense that outplayed Dordt, recording eight blocks to the home team’s six. Kylah Brewer was a big part of the Mustangs’ defensive front, recording six blocks. Sydney Marlow followed with two, while Claire Wilson and Payten Lode each had two.

Behind the block the Great Plains Athletic Conference rivals matched each other’s team dig tallies of 67. Aureana Bernales led Morningside with 18, followed closely by Marlow with 13 and Payton Shoquist 1ith 12.

The Defender offense is where the tables turned, with the hosts besting the Mustangs’ 44 kills by an additional 10. Marlow led the Morningside attack, with 22 kills. Lode followed her with a distant eight.

The Mustangs are back in Allee Gym on Saturday, playing a varsity triangular with Doane and Avila, with Morningside matches at 1 and 3 p.m.
