Morningside splits Softball Doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Mustangs made the trek north to Mitchell for a battle with the Tigers and won the first game in six innings before losing the second game in extra innings.

The Mustangs scored three in the first, two off a Kennedee Jones double and one on a Morgan Secora single. Jones doubled again in the third, bringing in a run. Secora followed with a two-run single, Jenna Skradski scored on a wild pitch, and Kennedy Wineland singled home another to make it 8-2 after three. 

Jalyn Noelle walked home a runner in the fourth to stretch the lead back to six. Mackenzi Harrel and Skradski singled in runs in the fifth. Wineland doubled and Paige Schuster singled, each bringing in a run to make it 13-4. While the Tigers were able to score one in the bottom of the sixth, the damage was done, and Morningside took the 13-5 win in game one.

Wineland tallied three hits and two RBI. Mackenna Sidzyik, Jones, and Secora tallied two hits each. Jones drove in two and Secora three in the win. Secora started the game in the circle, but Maggie Fisher earned the win in relief, pitching three innings. Skradski struck out three in two innings in relief of Fisher.

The Mustangs were able to rally to tie the game in the seventh, but the Tigers scored the final tally in the eighth to win 7-6 in game two. 

Kennedy Wineland scored the game’s first run on a double steal. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom half of the first. Emma Barwick singled in a run in the second to tie the game. Morningside built a 4-2 lead after Jones doubled in a run and Barwick grounded out, but a runner scored on the play to make it 4-2. The Tigers scored four straight in the middle innings to take a 6-4 advantage. Schuster singled home one and Harrel hit into a fielder’s choice that tied the game at six.

Ellie Gengler went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for Morningside. Schuster and Barwick tallied two hits apiece in game two. Bralen Biddlecome pitched five and two-thirds innings for the Mustangs. Jordan Skradski entered to pitch in relief, striking out three over two innings, but she ultimately was given the loss. 

Morningside is at Midland Monday for a doubleheader.
