SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – After surviving their first elimination game of the tournament Thursday morning, the Mustangs fell on a walk-off in the pod championship to see their season come to a close.
Morningside picked up a 6-4 win against Mount Marty to open the day, but fell 3-2 against Northwestern in their second game of the day.
The Mustangs used a four-run first inning to pull away with a 6-4 win over the Lancers. Mount Marty took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the lead was erased on a Mackenzi Harrel fielder’s choice that tied the game at one. Josie Hernandez doubled home two more and Bralen Biddlecome doubled home Hernandez to make it 4-1.
After the Lancers cut the lead to one, Kennedee Jones hit a two-run home run in the fifth to make it 6-3 in favor of Morningside. The Lancers struck for one in the top of the seventh, but Biddlecome shut things down from there to earn a Mustangs victory.
Mackenna Sidzyik and Ellie Gengler recorded two hits apiece, and one of Gengler’s hits was a double. Jones and Hernandez drove in two runs apiece. Biddlecome pitched the complete game, recording one strikeout in the victory, her eighth of the season.
Northwestern scored first and last in a 3-2 game that eliminated Morningside from the GPAC Tournament. The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Morningside struck for two in the third to take the lead. Sidzyik doubled in one run and Paige Schuster hit a sacrifice fly to give the Mustangs a lead.
Northwestern scored one in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom seventh to steal a win.
Kennedy Wineland recorded two hits in the second game of the day. Sidzyik added a double and an RBI. Morgan Secora pitched the complete game for the Mustangs, striking out four in the loss.
