YANKTON, S.D. –The Morningside University football team scored 45 consecutive points on Saturday after allowing an early score to defeat Mount Marty 45-6.

The Mustangs had five passing TDs, a rushing TD and a Tommy Fitzsimmons field goal that allowed the Mustangs to go 4-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play and 4-1 going into a bye week.

“I liked the way we responded after a bad start, and we locked in and played good ball,” said Mustangs coach Steve Ryan during the KMNS-AM postgame show. “I liked the fact that after that first drive, our defense shut them down and how our backups came in and played.”

Lennx Brown got the scoring started for Morningside, as he caught a pass from Zack Chevalier near the end zone, then alluded a couple Lancers defenders into the end zone for the first score of the day. That score came with 9 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Then, running back Ryan Cole scored from eight yards out with 1:58 remaining in the opening quarter, closing an eight-play, 78-yard drive.

Morningside’s longest scoring drive in time and distance of the afternoon ended with that Fitzsimmons field goal, which came from 21 yards out. That ended a 90-play drive.

To end the first half, Chevalier found Jakob Nelson from 15 yards out that put the Mustangs up 24-6. That play lasted just 56 seconds, as the Mustangs went 57 yards on that drive.

Brown again scored a TD pass midway through the third quarter. Chevalier found the former QB from 15 yards away. That play quickly ended a two-play drive that went 70 yards.

Drew Sellon made an acrobatic TD catch early in the fourth quarter from 30 yards out. He had two Lancers on him, but Sellon extended his arms to only where he could catch it for the Mustangs’ sixth scoring play of the day.

Laken Harnly capped the seventh scoring drive, as he caught a 22-yard pass from Chevalier, who was this week’s GPAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Morningside amassed 515 total offensive yards, with the majority of those coming in the air. Chevalier was 25-for-34 for 363 yards and five touchdowns. Sellon was his most popular receiver, as he caught nine passes for 166 yards. Brown had 91 yards.

Max Hough led Morningside in rushing yards with 79, followed by Cole’s 61.

Isaac Pingel led Morningside with 10 total tackles, six of them solo. He also had a sack for six yards.

Cade Harriman and Blake Bellamy each had seven total tackles.

Dijion Walls also picked off a Lancers pass for 51 yards.
