Fremont, Nebraska – For the second straight game, The Fremont Moo scored double-digit runs and had double-digit hits, in a 10-8 victory over The Nebraska Prospects Thursday night, at Historic Moller Field. Fremont recorded three triples on their way to the win.
Fremont got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Against Prospects starter Colton Homolka, Fremont’s Miles Meadows led off with a walk, then stole second. The next batter, Jack Torosian, hit an rbi triple off the left-center field fence, scoring Meadows, to make it 1-0. Then, Cooper Fuchino drove in Torosian with a ground out to third, to make it 2-0. The next batter, Collin Pitts, singled, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Stephen Espinoza hit an rbi triple, scoring PItts, to make it 3-0. Then, Isaac Bonner hit an rbi single, to put The Moo ahead 4-0.
The Bovine Nine added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Cooper Fuchino led off with a single. Then, Collin Pitts doubled to put runners at second and third. The next batter, Parker Mooney, hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line, scoring Fuchino, to make it 5-0. Then, Stephen Espinoza hit an rbi single, bringing in Pitts, to make it a 6-0 Fremont lead. Isaac Bonner reached on a fielder’s choice, then stole second. Then, Carson Burnett hit an rbi single, scoring Bonner, to make it a 7-0 Fremont advantage.
The Prospects got on the board in the top of the fourth. Moo starter Tyson Romero, making his Fremont season debut, looked sharp early. The 2023 ILB Pitcher-of-the-Year retired the first ten batters he faced before he ran into some trouble. Jackson Trout was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Elliott Peterson reached on an infield single to put runners at first and second. A base on balls to Nico Sall loaded the bases. Then, Romero hit Korey Cozad with a pitch, bringing home Trout, to make it 7-1. A wild pitch scored Peterson to make it a 7-2 ballgame.
Two more runs came across for The Prospects in the top of the fifth. Paul Schuyler was hit by a pitch. Then, Trent Barry singled and an errant throw from Jack Torosian in right field put runners at first and third. Easton Swafford singled, scoring Schuyler, to make it 7-3. A wild pitch advanced Barry to third. Then, Romero got Jackson Trout to hit into a 4-6-3 ground out double play. On the play, Barry scored, to make it a 7-4 game.
The Moo got a couple runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Against reliever Jonathan Moffitt, Jack Torosian hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped by The Prospects Blake Stenger. Then, Cooper Fuchino hit The Moo’s third triple of the night, scoring Torosian, to make it 8-4. A wild pitch scored Fuchino to put Fremont ahead, 9-4.
Like Wednesday night, The Prospects made things interesting in the top of the seventh. Against Fremont reliever Brandt Phillips, The Prospects Jackson Trout reached on a throwing error by Parker Mooney at second base. Two batters later, Nico Sall singled to put runners at first and third. Sall stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Then, Korey Cozad singled, scoring Trout and Sall, to make it 9-6.
Fremont scored its final run of the night in the bottom of the seventh. Stephen Espinoza walked and took second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Isaac Bonner walked and Carson Burnett did the same, to load the bases. The Prospects went to the bullpen and brought in Keinan Lantell. Two batters later, Miles Meadows reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Espinoza, to make it 10-6.
In the top of the ninth against Fremont reliever Connor Petersen, Korey Cozad drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Jacob Perrin hit an rbi double, scoring Cozad, to make it 10-7. The next batter, Luke Bies, singled, scoring Perrin, to make it 10-8. A wild pitch advanced Bies to second. However, Petersen struck out Trent Barry to end the game, securing the Moo 10-8 victory.
Fremont (23-14, 10-3) scored ten runs off eleven hits with three errors. The Prospects (5-18, 0-8) had eight runs with eleven hits and one error.
Moo starter Tyson Romero pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three earned runs off four hits, struck out four, walked three, had three wild pitches and hit three batters. Brandt Phillips (2-2) earned the win in relief. The Fremont native pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one earned run off four hits, struck out two and walked one. Connor Petersen (1) picked up the save. He pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs off three hits, struck out five, walked one and had one wild pitch.
The Prospects Colton Homolka (1-2) took the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings, giving up seven runs off eight hits, struck out two, walked three and had one wild pitch. Jonathan Moffitt pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off one hit, struck out two, walked three and had three wild pitches. Keinan Lantell pitched 2.0 innings, giving up one run off two hits and struck out two.
Offensively for Fremont, Miles Meadows was 0-for-4, but drove in one run. Jack Torosian was 1-for-5 with an rbi. Cooper Fuchino was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. Collin Pitts was 3-for-4. Parker Mooney was 0-for-5 with an rbi sacrifice fly. Stephen Espinoza was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Isaac Bonner was 1-for-3 with an rbi. Carson Burnett was 1-for-2 and drove in one run.
For The Prospects, Easton Swafford was 2-for-5 with an rbi. Nico Sall was 2-for-4. Korey Cozad went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs. Jacob Perrin was 1-for-5 with an rbi. Luke Bies was 1-for-1 and drove in one run. Trent Barry went 2-for-5.
Game three of the five-game series with The Moo and The Prospects is Friday night at Historic Moller Field. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
