In the early hours of March 8, 2024, the McCook Police Department received a report of loose cattle at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds.

Officers quickly coordinated with a Red Willow County Deputy and sought assistance from the Mid Plains Community College (MPCC) Rodeo Team to corral the wandering cattle.

According to a news release, upon arrival at the fairgrounds, officers encountered two bulls roaming freely. With the help of MPCC Rodeo Team members, those bulls were successfully secured. However, the situation intensified as it became apparent that seven bulls were still on the loose.

In this video interview, MPPC student Rex Day recounts the evening of capturing the loose bulls.

Following tracks in the freshly fallen snow, law enforcement officers located the majority of the loose bulls near the UPS building, where six out of seven were contained using a pen.

One bull continued to evade capture and was later spotted near Norris Avenue and Marsh Avenue in McCook city limits. Three members of the MPCC Rodeo Team mounted on horseback chased the bull southeast to Norris Park. Utilizing their expertise, the team safely roped and captured the elusive bull, which was loaded onto a trailer and returned to the Red Willow County Fairgrounds.

The McCook Police Department extended its gratitude to the Mid Plains Community College Rodeo Team for their response and assistance in apprehending the loose cattle.
