Iowa State sweeps Toledo at Cyclone Invitational

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) handed Toledo (3-1, 0-0 MAC) its first loss of the season in the Cyclones’ home opener Thursday. ISU sealed the 3-0 sweep 25-20, 28-26, 25-17.

Kiersten Schmitt provided crucial kills in the victory, leading the Cyclones with 10 to tie her career high. Rachel Van Gorp led the Cyclone defense with 14 digs, her third straight double figure performance.

SET ONE

Toledo got out to a lead of six to begin, but Iowa State fought back on its way to tying things at 18 and holding the lead from there. Three Cyclones recorded multiple kills in the set as the team hit at .280 to take the match lead.

SET TWO

Iowa State took an advantage of 11-6 early on, meanwhile Toledo would bring things back within three (12-9). Deep into the set a battle broke out. As the score was tied 20-20, five more ties followed. Toledo found set point but the Cyclones answered, going on to win the extended set 28-26.

SET THREE

The Cyclones jumped ahead 6-0 before Toledo would get on the board. ISU never let go of the lead, finding 20 points while Toledo held 14 after a Lilly Wachholz ace, one of three on the night for the hitter. A kill by Wachholz would seal the sweep 25-17. Schmitt hit five kills in the set alone.

UP NEXT

Iowa State next plays Wake Forest Friday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cyclone Invite. Following the tournament, ISU hosts the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
