Iowa State sweeps Red Raiders

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (9-8, 3-3 Big 12) swept Texas Tech (9-10, 1-6 Big 12) Friday night by set scores of 25-11, 25-20, 25-18. Iowa State hit at .317 through the match making for the fourth time this season to hit over .300.

Freshman Rachel Van Gorp had her second straight double-double with 11 digs and 10 kills at an efficient .381. Van Gorp also served up an ace, while ISU totaled 8 through the three sets compared to the Red Raiders’ two.

Amiree Hendricks-Walker hit her first eight kills without an error, going on to total 10 at a remarkable .667 for a season-high hitting percentage. The first-year Cyclone also led the match with four blocks. Faith DeRonde made for a trio of Cyclones to hit 10 at a hitting percentage of over .300 as she totaled hers at .308.

Brooke Stonestreet led the match with 16 digs at 5.33 per set, her 10th straight game with 10 or more.

SET ONE

The Cyclones had an early 4-0 run to take the scoreboard to 7-2 as TTU called a timeout. At 7-4 Iowa State then hit another run, this one of 12, to go up 19-4 after seven kills, a pair of aces by Tierney Jackson and a block. Hendricks-Walker put down three of those kills in the run. Iowa State kept control of the set, winning it 25-11. Iowa State outhit Texas Tech .417 to -.136 in the opening frame.

SET TWO

TTU responded, leading 9-8 to start the set. Iowa State flipped the lead at 10-9 after a Van Gorp ace, but another lead change followed with TTU going ahead 11-10. Iowa State followed with yet another lead change as Kiersten Schmitt collected her fifth kill. ISU held the lead from there to win the set 25-20 and take the 2-0 match lead. Iowa State again hit over .300 in the set while Schmitt led the set with five kills.

SET THREE

Texas Tech led up until ISU took the advantage at 8-7 on another Van Gorp dagger. Ties followed, but Iowa State remained ahead. DeRonde was the first to total double-digit kills, while Van Gorp and Hendricks-Walker joined soon after. Iowa State took the victory on a run of four to solidify the sweep 25-18.
