AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-21, 3-9 Big 12) was swept by Kansas (25-12-1, 10-5 Big 12) this weekend, as the Jayhawks secured both games in Saturday’s doubleheader action.

Errors were the theme of the day for the Cyclones, as ISU combined for eight mistakes through the two games.

In the first game, five Cyclone errors and a seven-run fourth inning from the Jayhawks sealed the deal, as Kansas earned an 11-0 shutout victory. Game two was highlighted by a three-error second inning for the Cyclones which saw the Jayhawks score all six of their runs.

The wind was hovering around 30 miles per hour all afternoon, as it impacted a handful of foul balls and forced most all balls to go foul and prevented any long balls from either team.

ISU 0, KU 11 (5 Inn.)
Kansas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Saturday, perhaps setting the tone for the rest of the day. The Cyclones had two errors in the frame and the Jayhawks capitalized to take the early lead.

Kansas continued to take advantage of ISU mistakes throughout the game, eventually going on to win by 11. The 11-run victory ties the largest margin of victory by either team in the series.

Angelina Allen had a pair of hits for the Cyclones while Tiana Poole had the lone other. Both Milaysia Ochoa and Carli Spelhaug drew walks.

Kansas was led by Campbell Bagshaw who had a pair of hits and two RBI. Addison Purvis led the team with four RBI on one hit and a walk. KU’s starter, Kasey Hamilton, went the distance, allowing just three hits in a shutout win.

How it Happened
The game started about as poorly as one could hope for the Cyclones, as the Jayhawks took advantage of two first inning errors, pairing them with a pair of hits to drive in three runs and take an early 3-0 lead.

It only got worse for the Cyclones, as a seven-run fourth frame broke open the game for the Jayhawks. Kansas had two outs and one on first and the Cyclones looked to be through the inning, as Camille Marin threw out the runner attempting to steal. However, the field official ruled obstruction which caused the inning to continue. It was from there that KU tacked on their seven runs – all of which were unearned – as it went on to win.

ISU 2, KU 6
A familiar theme – Cyclone errors – plagued the second game, as ISU dropped its second game of the day and third of the series to Kansas.

The Cyclones were limited to just four hits, scattered from four different players. Tiana Poole had the lone RBI for the Cyclones while both Tatum Johnson and Milaysia Ochoa scored runs.

Jaiden Ralston pitched really well for the Cyclones in a relief appearance, going 5.2 innings and allowing zero runs while striking out three.

Kansas had a pair of players, Aynslee Linduff and Campbell Bagshaw, who recorded two hits on the day. KU’s starter, Olivia Bruno went six innings where she gave up just two runs on three hits.

How it Happened
Iowa State got on the board first in the second game, snapping a five-inning scoreless streak from the first game. Ochoa led the game off with a walk and was able to advance to third on an Alesia Ranches single through the right side. A Poole groundout to short would allow Milaysia to score as ISU went up 1-0.

The second inning was an adventure, as the Jayhawks plated all six of their runs in the top of the second frame. A trio of Cyclone errors and seven Kansas hits allowed for three earned and three unearned runs to score to give the Jayhawks a five-run cushion.

The Iowa State bats were held in check until the fifth inning when they were able to get one more run on the board. Tatum Johnson led the inning off with a walk and was able to advance to second on a groundout. A Kansas error allowed Allen to reach as Johnson advanced to third. Then, a wild pitch from Kansas allowed Johnson to cross as ISU inched closer.

That was all the closer Iowa State would get though, as Kansas slammed the door in the remaining two innings, keeping the Cyclones at two runs and going on to win, 6-2.
