Fremont Man arrested following High Speed Chase in Fremont and Washington County
October 10th, 2024 | Dodge County Sheriff's Office

On Tuesday night, a sergeant with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office observed a black Mazda 3 make an improper turn. The sergeant activated his overhead lights to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on 23rd Street in Fremont. The vehicle then began to flee from the deputy and turned north onto Highway 77. As the vehicle failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens and continued northbound on Highway 77, the driver threw items out of the window. The vehicle then turned east onto Highway 91 and continued to flee. Just west of Blair, the Blair Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were able to successfully deploy tire- deflation devices, and the vehicle eventually stopped.  The driver, Paul Leffler, 51, of Fremont, was taken into custody, and while a deputy was transporting Leffler, Leffler became unresponsive. The deputy administered Narcan to Leffler, and The Nickerson Fire Department transported him to the hospital. It is believed Leffler ingested a large amount of narcotics prior to his arrest. The items that Leffler threw out of the window were located and identified as methamphetamine. Leffler was booked into jail on the following charges: Operate Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Distribute, Habitual Criminal, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Willful Reckless Driving, Obstructing a Peace Officer, and Resisting Arrest.
