Creighton Volleyball ranked 9th in AP Poll
September 9th, 2024 | gocreighton.com

OMAHA, Neb. — The Creighton Volleyball team moved into the Top 10 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the first time since 2019, coming in at No. 9 in the poll that was released on Monday, Sept. 9. It’s a two spot improvement since last week for the Bluejays, who have dropped just one set in five matches and are 5-0 for the third time.

The No. 9 slotting matches CU’s best ranking since also being voted No. 9 on Nov. 4, 2019. It’s the 22nd time overall that Creighton has been ranked in the Top 10.

The Bluejays are one of 15 schools (along with Baylor, BYU, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin) to have been ranked each of the last 48 polls. Creighton has been ranked in all but six of the past 118 weeks the AVCA has put out a Top 25 poll and 126 times in program history, which ranks 41st-most all-time. Creighton is 206-45 all-time when playing as a ranked team in the AVCA poll.

CU’s all-time best ranking in program history is No. 7, which came in the poll released on Aug. 28, 2017. This is the 13th straight campaign that Creighton has spent at least one week in the top-25.

Five Bluejay opponents are ranked in this week’s poll. The Bluejays have already beaten then-No. 20 (and current No. 23) USC on Sept. 5th, and will meet up with No. 5 Nebraska (Sept. 10), No. 4 Louisville (Sept. 15), No. 7 Purdue (Sept. 20) and No. 11 Kansas (Sept. 21) away from home in the next 12 days. BIG EAST rival Marquette was 24th last week but dropped out of the poll after losing three home matches to fall to 1-3.

With the top four teams in last week’s poll combining for a 6-4 record last week including three 3-0 defeats, there was more upheaval than normal at the top. Pittsburgh moved from No. 3 to No. 1 for the first time and is followed in the top five by Stanford, Penn State, Louisville and Nebraska. Two-time defending national champion Texas fell from the top spot to No. 6 after suffering a pair of losses last week.

Creighton returns to the court on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with a match at No. 5 Nebraska (5-1). The contest will be broadcast on BTN.
