Creighton Softball blanks Georgetown in series opener

OMAHA, Neb. — Powered by homers from Lily WestElla Dalton and Sydney Potter, Creighton Softball delivered an 8-0 win in five innings over Georgetown on Thursday, March 28.

The victory moved the Bluejays to 19-14 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST action, while Georgetown fell to 10-20 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Creighton’s offense was fast and furious in the win as Lily West opened the game for the Bluejay attack with a solo home run to left-center.

The second inning saw Ella Dalton blast a two-run shot to right field, plating Erika Perez who had drawn a one out walk.

Inning number three saw the Bluejays connect for another home run as Madeline Vejvoda laced a leadoff single and Sydney Potter lifted a two-run blast over the center field wall to make it 5-0.

The Bluejays pushed across one run in the sixth via an RBI as Emma Rosonke laced an RBI single to left-center.

Creighton closed the game out with a pair of two-out tallies in the fifth. Ashten Piersen bounced a single through the left side, then West worked a walk to set the table. Cayla Nielsen bounced an RBI single up the middle to make it 7-0, then pinch runner Elly Beeson scampered home from third on a wild pitch to give Creighton the win via run rule.

Four Bluejays closed the game with a pair of hits as West, Vejvoda and Ronsonke were 2-for-3, while Nielsen went 2-for-4.

Natalia Puchino earned the win (13-2) with a two-hit shutout, notching her 200th career strikeout in the opening frame. Georgetown’s Kayla Dunn took the loss (4-8), allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over 4.2 innings.

The Bluejays and Hoyas continue their three-game series on Friday, March 29 at 4:00 pm at Kitty Gaughan Pavilion.
