Creighton Baseball loses season finale to Seton Hall

Omaha, Neb. — The Creighton Baseball team finished the 2024 season with a 35-17 record following a 2-1 loss to Seton Hall on Saturday, May 18th. After the game the Bluejays recognized seniors Colby CanalesDominic CancellieriNolan CliffordJack GraceDaniel HammondCade LommelJack PelusoCasey TrappSam Vomhof and manager Colton Smith.

Seton Hall took its only lead of the day in the ninth inning as Jonathan Luders reached on an infield chopper and moved to second on a throwing error that sailed high.. He was bunted to third and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Aiden Robbins.

Creighton got a two-out single from Kyle Hess in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Jack Torosian’s line-drive down the first base line was caught by a diving Andrew Bianco as the Pirates salvaged the final game of the series.

Creighton scored the game’s first run for the first time in the series. Ben North walked to start the second inning, moved to second on a Hess single and scored on Connor Capece’s first RBI since March 30th.

Seton Hall countered in the top of the third inning when Zack Sylvester homered for the second straight day down the left field line, his sixth round-tripper of the year.

Seton Hall closer Jay Allmer picked up his fifth save of the season after recording the final two outs. Seton Hall finished the year with a 24-30 mark and went 7-14 in league action.

Sailors and Hess each had a pair of hits on Saturday for CU. Daniel Hammond dropped to 3-3 after allowing the unearned run in the top of the ninth. Eli Nissen recorded the first seven outs, allowing just one run, before giving way to freshman classmate Jack Pineau. Pineau was magnificent in relief, throwing four scoreless innings before giving way to senior Casey Trapp. Trapp plunked the only batter he faced before closer Mason Koch struck out consecutive batters to escape a jam in the top of the seventh and keep the game tied.

The four-team BIG EAST Tournament, Presented by JEEP, begins Wednesday in Mason, Ohio. Second-seeded St. John’s faces third-seeded Georgetown, followed by regular-season league champ UConn meeting fourth-seeded Xavier.
