College Rodeo Spotlight: Laynee Ohm, MPCC Rodeo

College Rodeo Spotlight: Laynee Ohm, MPCC Rodeo
October 4th, 2024 | Rebel Sjeklocha

Freshman rodeo athlete Laynee Ohm has wasted no time getting competitive at the college level. Ohm, a multi-event athlete, competes in goat tying, breakaway roping, and team roping for the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team.

Last weekend, she was 2nd in the women’s all-around race at the Dickinson State College Rodeo. She placed 3rd in the breakaway roping and 6th in the goat tying to earn the honor.

Part of Ohm’s transition to the college level has included reframing her mindset in short go performances.

“Going from high school to college rodeo, I’ve only had to deal with a short go a handful of times,” said Ohm. “It’s something I’ve had to adjust to and find a mindset that works for me.”

In addition to her MPCC teammates, Ohm looks for support from her older sister, Emma, a junior at Black Hills State University. With both sisters competing in the Great Plains Region and in the same events, Ohm says her older sister’s wisdom can come in handy.

“She’s a big help for me,” said Ohm. “If one of us wins, we’re both happy.”

With every athlete’s eyes on the College National Finals Rodeo, Ohm takes her outlook a step further.

“It doesn’t matter if I can make the College Finals if I can’t be competitive there,” she said. “That [mindset] helps me at the regional level too.”

Ohm and her teammates will be back in action October 4-5 at the Iowa Central College Rodeo.
