Briar Cliff Softball splits Doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan

The Charger softball team split their doubleheader Tuesday evening against the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan, falling 5-4 in game one before putting on an offensive show in game two to take a 11-4 victory.
 
Game 1, L 5-4,
 
After surrendering a homerun to open the game, the Chargers responded in the top of the third after a RBI-double from Aubrey Chichurka evened the score. Kylee Lukes gave the Cliff a 2-1 lead after scoring on a wild pitch. Kylie Wilhelms capped the scoring in the inning with a RBI-single to put the Chargers up 3-1.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Cliff got into scoring position trailing by two after a leadoff double from Skylar Bainter. An RBI single from Karis Gifford inched the Chargers closer heading into the final inning. The Chargers failed to get runners on base in the top of the seventh, falling in order.
 
Lukes, Chichurka, and Kylie Wilhelms all recorded two hits in the contest. Joliana Mancha came in relief, tossing three scoreless innings on four hits.
 
Game 2, W 11-4
 
In game two, Mancha opened the contest and threw two innings and surrendered two runs. Bella Valdez threw five innings and allowed just two runs on five hits to earn the win.
 
Wilhelms put the Cliff up early after a RBI-double drove in Gifford. Kieya Belmont the next inning recorded a RBI-single to left field tied the ball game for the Cliff.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Lukes belted a two-run blast to center field. In the top of the fifth, the Cliff plated six runs following a Tigers error. The Chargers capped of the scoring with an RBI-single from Lukes and a two-RBI double from Wilhelms.
 
The Chargers tallied 17 hits in the contest. Lukes and Wilhelms both drove in three runs in the contest. Belmont went three-for-four with two RBIs and two runs scored.
 
The Cliff improved to 15-14 on the season and will return to action this Friday in Omaha as they take on the College of Saint Mary.
