Briar Cliff Baseball splits Doubleheader with Northwestern

The Charger baseball team split their home finale against the visiting Red Raiders of Northwestern Thursday afternoon.
 
Game 1
 
A scoring barrage in the bottom of the third propelled the Cliff to a 6-0 lead. With two outs and runners at the corners with two outs, Cam Reimer launched a two-RBI double into the left center gap to score the Cliff’s first runs. With the bases loaded, Drew Petersen blasted a grand slam over the left center wall to put BCU up 6-2.
 
The Cliff added two runs in the bottom of the sixth off of two Red Raider errors.
 
The Red Raiders put themselves in position to tie the game, trailing by one run with two outs in the top of the seventh. The Charger defense hunkered down, as third baseman Diego Trujillo fielded a grounder and helped the defense turn two to close the contest out.
 
Reimer went two-for-four with three RBIs in the contest. Logan Borboa tossed six innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five.
 
Game 2
 
Trujillo broke the scoring tie in the bottom of the third, with a RBI-single to right field drove in Walker Moore.
 
The Red Raiders in the top of the fourth scored seven runs, capped by a three-run homer to take a 7-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cliff fought back after a two-RBI double from Easton Cone and a RBI-single from Damon Schmid cut the lead to three.
 
In the top of the seventh, Rance Bryant came in relief for the Cliff and recorded two strikeouts. Cade Marquardt in the inning threw out a runner trying to steal second in the inning. The Cliff in the bottom of the inning fell in order to drop game two.
 
The Chargers will conclude the regular season next Saturday, as they travel to Orange City to conclude the four game series against the Red Raiders.
