Briar Cliff Baseball splits Doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Senior Walker Moore had four hits as the Briar Cliff University baseball team (7-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference, 13-13) split with Dakota Wesleyan (3-7 GPAC, 9-18), Friday at Bishop Mueller Field.  The Chargers won the first game 11-4 and dropped the nightcap 6-4.

Game 1
Dakota Wesleyan held Briar Cliff in check for the first five innings.  Down 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, the Chargers came alive. 

Moore and junior Cam Riemer drew walks.  Junior Jared Sitzmann smashed a double to right center.  That scored Moore and moved Riemer to third.

Senior Easton Cone drew a walk and saw senior Peyton Grant come in to run for him.  Junior Jake Chronic reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Grant out, moved Sitzmann to third and pushed Riemer across the plate.

Junior Justin Remar sent the ball in orbit over the left field fence to make it 5-4.  BCU scored six runs in the seventh inning to seal the game.

For Briar Cliff, Remar had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs while Chronic and Moore had two hits, two runs and two RBI’s a piece.  Freshman Logan Borboa (3-2) gave up six hits, four runs with two earned, walked two and struck out five in seven innings.  

For Dakota Wesleyan, Seth Christiansen (1-3) gave up six hits, five runs, walked four and struck out three in 5.7 innings.

Game 2
In the first inning, junior Diego Trujillo singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out.  Riemer drew a walk; the pitch got away from the catcher allowing Trujillo to score.

The Tigers came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.  In the fifth inning, Trujillo and Moore were both hit by a pitch.

Following a sacrifice bunt, Trujillo scored on a passed ball to make it 2-2.  DWU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-2 lead.

In the seventh inning, Moore doubled to center field and moved to third on a fly out.  Moore scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.  Dakota Wesleyan scored twice in the seventh to take control.

For Briar Cliff, Moore and Trujillo had two hits and scored two runs each.  Senior Matthew Hmielewski (2-2) gave up one hit, two runs, walked five and struck out four in 2.3 inning.  

For Dakota Wesleyan, Caleb Meyers had three hits.  On the mound, Meyers (2-1) gave up three hits, two runs with one earned, walked five and struck out seven in 5.7 innings.  Logan Miller (1) gave up one hit, one run and walked one in one inning.

Briar Cliff remains home, Tuesday, Apr. 2 taking on Mayville State.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
