Terry Max Scherer was born in West Point to Candace (Bowman) and Warren “Bud” Scherer of rural Pilger Nebraska on April 3, 1940. Terry was raised in a hardworking farming family. south of Pilger. Terry loved being on the farm. He spent part of his childhood in Galesburg Illinois where he attended school and worked at the local A&W Rootbeer drive-in. Terry was active in FFA throughout his high school years and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1958. Terry would spend his summers back on the farm in Nebraska and began dating Janet Elaine Tiedtke (passed) also of rural Pilger.

Terry and Janet were married on February 1, 1959 in Pilger. They made their home on a farm six miles south of town and during that time they had three boys, Jeff, Bob and Scott. They lived there until the fall 1964 when they moved to Galesburg. Terry took a job with the Lucky Boy Bread Company and Bakery. In 1966 they welcomed the birth of their daughter Ann. In 1968, the family moved back to Nebraska and settled in West Point. Terry worked for his father-in-law Allen Tiedke as a carpenter until taking a job at the newly opened Iowa Beef Processors in West Point in 1970. While at IBP, Terry was known for his strong work ethic and efficiency at his job until retiring in 2004.

Terry was a handyman and enjoyed fixing things around the house and working with his hands. After his kids were living on their own, he spent his free time racing pigeons with a local club, a hobby he enjoyed in his youth. Terry enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He was known for striking up a conversation with everyone he met in and around the community. He also enjoyed having friends and neighbors over to the house for coffee to shoot the breeze. He definitely had the gift of gab along with a great sense of humor and had people rolling in laughter. He was cracking jokes up to the end. Terry will be missed dearly by family, friends and neighbors.

Terry is preceded in death by his wife Janet, brother Douglas, parents Candace Horst, Warren Scherer and step-fathers Wilbur Danner and Pete Horst, mother-in-law Viola Mewis, father-in-law Allen Tiedtke and step father-in-law Lester Mewis.

Terry is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Jeff Scherer (Lori) of Beemer, NE, Bob Scherer (Cindy) of Dakota Dunes, SD, Scott Scherer (Jean) of Rapid City, SD, daughter and son-in-law Anne Greene (Scott) of Arlington, VA., ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Terry is also survived by his sister-in-law Carol James formerly of Pilger, Nebraska and multiple nieces and nephews.

A private family burial and internment for Terry and Janet is planned at the Pilger cemetery for Friday, October 6th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Terry Scherer to St. Joseph Villa Assisted Living facility in West Point. Rest in peace Dad.
