Kearney area farmer cuts milo crop for cattle feed | 2022 Fridays in the Field | Ep. 16

August 19th, 2022

Due to late fertilizer applications, the weeds took over a Kearney area farmer’s milo crop, prompting him to cut the milo for cattle feed.

Matt Oelofse said by harvesting his milo crop for feed, he could at least help another producer feed his cattle.

Jacob Roth visited with Oelofse about his research and thought process leading up to this decision.

In taking nitrate tests on the milo, Oelofse said the results showed a positive  17 points; he said a good nitrate test on average is about 12 points.

Oelofse also said the milo stalks will also add roughage to the cattle’s diet.
