Hastings, Neb. — Winter weather is on track to return to south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas late Thursday with accumulating snow and blowing snow. The greatest intensity of snow is expected to be overnight, but gusty north winds and cold temperatures will keep impacts going through Friday morning. Senior Forecaster Shawn Rossi with the National Weather Service-Hastings says 2-5″ of snow is expected west of Kearney. Rossi says east and northeast of the Highway 281 corridor, amounts will be higher, possibly in the 4-7″ or 5-8″ range, where a Winter Storm Warning is posted…

Rossi says, “As you go into central & north-central Nebraska…we’re expecting the totals will possibly be on the higher end as some moisture wraps around on the back-side of the system…early during the morning hours tomorrow (Friday). So areas northeast of Grand Island might see the snowfall on the higher end of this range and there’s going to be more impacts of snow and this is where that “Winter Storm Warning” is in effect where you’re going to see even more of that blowing and drifting snow causing issues.”

The snow is expected to diminish Friday morning.

Once the snow ends, the main concern will be dangerously cold Arctic air Friday night through Tuesday morning in which wind chills of -25 degrees to -45 degrees are expected. Winds could be 30-40 mph. Thursday overnight into Friday.
