SCOTTSBLUFF (July 20, 2023) – The weather was unrelenting at Scotts Bluff Country Club on Thursday for the first round of the 115th Nebraska Amateur Championship. The morning wave, originally slated for an 8 a.m. start, was unable to tee off until noon due to lightning. Play was suspended at 4:43 p.m. local time (MDT) for the day due to unplayable course conditions caused by more heavy rain, leaving the first round to be completed Friday morning.

Charlie Zielinski of Omaha leads the way at 4-under with only part of the first wave completed, and the second wave yet to start. He started red-hot, carding an eagle on No. 1. After a bogey on No. 3, Zielinski kept the ball rolling with a birdie on No. 5, a 465-yard par-4.

Zielinski, a Creighton Bluejay, made another eagle on No. 9 to cap off a 32 (-4) on the front nine. He finished 12 holes at 4-under, before play was suspended.

La Vista’s Alex Zillig recorded three birdies on the front nine, and recorded an eagle after the turn on No. 10. He was able to finish 14 holes at 3-under before the horns blew.

Matthew Schaefer of Fordyce had a quiet first eight holes, but got hot and carded birdies on three of his last six before suspension on No. 14.

Waterloo’s Johnny Williams and Omaha’s Matt Quandt round out the top 5, with Williams at 2-under through 14 holes and Quandt 2-under through 13.

First round play will resume Friday morning at 7:30 a.m., and the second round will commence in the afternoon.
