ORD – The Valley County Sheriff has agreed to a plea deal in his insurance fraud case.

Under the agreement filed in Valley County District Court, Casey Hurlburt is pleading no contest to an amended charge of Attempt of a Class IV Felony. He also agreed to surrender his law enforcement license in exchange for no additional charges being filed.

Under the agreement, prosecutors are recommending that Hurlburt be punished with a fine. They will not seek jail time or probation.

The Nebraska State Patrol arrested Hurlburt in October, accusing him of lying on a car insurance claim filed on January 24, 2023 for an accident involving a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo.

Investigators said the accident happened in March of 2022. Hurlburt then bought an insurance policy in April and claimed the crash happened in October so insurance would cover the repairs.

The exact amount of the insurance claim wasn’t specified, but it was more than $1,500 and less than $5,000.

Hurlburt appeared in court Wednesday afternoon to formalize the agreement.
