Multiple tornadoes were reported Friday afternoon as a line of strong thunderstorms made its way through central Nebraska.

The National Weather Service in Hastings issued the first tornado warning just after noon for portions of northern Buffalo County and southern Sherman County. At least one tornado was spotted a short distance north and east of Ravenna.

Buffalo County Emergency Management said the Ravenna Fire Department was assessing damage in the area after the storms passed and at least a few farmsteads were believed to have some damage to buildings and outbuildings.

As the storm moved northeast another tornado touched down near Rockville. The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office reported damage to trees and buildings in the area.

Multiple touchdowns were confirmed in Howard County with one crossing Highway 11 northwest of Elba as that community also reported some damage.

At least one more tornado was then reported near Wolbach. Region 26 Emergency Management said they were still waiting for information Friday afternoon, but had reports of houses and outbuildings damaged in Sherman and Greeley counties.

Howard Greeley Rural Public Power District and Loup Valleys Rural Public Power District both reported widespread damage to power poles and downed power lines in Sherman, Greeley and Howard Counties. Linemen were working Friday afternoon to restore power for those affected by outages.

Teams from the National Weather Service will survey damage around the area over the weekend.
