Webster County, Neb. — The community of Red Cloud sustained thunderstorm wind damage overnight that knocked out power to areas of town including Red Cloud Community Schools which called off classes Thursday.

At 12:33 a.m., reports from Red Cloud indicated that multiple trees and some power lines were downed in and near town, including some that had to be removed from Highway 136.

The National Weather Service does not have an instrument for measuring wind speed & wind power in the Red Cloud area, however there was a wind gust of 56 mph in Riverton, located just west of the community, at approximately the same time that damage occurred in Red Cloud.

A sizeable portion of town was still without power as of 4:39 a.m.

A community message says the City Office is aware of severe damage around town and personnel are working on restoring power.

National Weather Service-Hastings Meteorologists say the storm damage in Red Cloud was caused by straight line winds. They say there was no evidence of any tornadic activity in the Red Cloud area.
