THEDFORD – Thedford Public Schools’ request to increase its tax request authority failed in a special election on Tuesday.

The Thomas County Clerk’s Office says the final tally was 141 votes for and 122 against. The measure needed 60% of the vote to succeed.

The district had been asking for a one time increase of $1 million to its property tax request authority.

Superintendent Blake Dahlberg told KBEAR News last month that the district has reduced its tax request over the past five years, but revenue has not kept up with expenses. He said that compared to similar sized schools, Thedford’s spending ranks near the bottom.

The district has continued cutting costs by choosing not to fill some open positions. A post on the district’s Facebook page following the results said there will be no changes to its current staffing for the 2024-25 school year. Discussions on next steps will take place over the coming months.
