Several arrests made in Cozad disturbance

Several Dawson County residents face charges in connection with a disturbance earlier this week. It stems from a physical altercation involving a hatchet, that took place at Cozad’s Casey’s General Store around 10:00am Tuesday morning August 21, 2024.

As a Dawson County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived at the scene another vehicle, a black SUV, was departing and fled at a high rate of speed. The vehicle later stopped in Cozad and a high risk stop was conducted with all occupants ordered out of the vehicle.

Many items of drug paraphernalia were located throughout the vehicle during probable cause search. Also seized were Marijuana, THC Wax, a firearm and a holster to the firearm.

According to a witness statement, a confrontation occured between a man in the vehicle and another one at Casey’s. He was identified as 28-year-old Christopher Obar of Gothenburg. Obar reportedly swung a hatchet at the other man and then Obar was thrown to the ground according to the witness.

Obar later came to the Sheriff’s Office and provided a statement to investigators indicating that he and the occupants of the vehicle got into an argument over the ownership of the vehicle and while attempting to get his possessions from the vehicle he grabbed a hatchet.

Obar was arraigned in Dawson County Court Wednesday on charges of 2nd Degree Attempted Assault and Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony. His bond was set at 10% of $50,000 and preliminary hearing set for Spetember 3, 2024 at 3:00pm in Dawson County Court.

Others in the vehicle who were arrested were Jacob Refior, 30 of Lexington; Nathaniel Manning, 29 of Cozad, Mikayla Daleness, 25 of Cozad and the driver 29-year-old Jordan Nicewonger of rural Lexington.

Manning was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Possession of Methamphetamine. His bond was set at 10% of $100,000 and preliminary hearing set for Spetember 3, 2024 at 2:00pm in Dawson County Court.

Refior was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Possession of Methamphetamine. His bond was set at 10% of $250,000 and preliminary hearing set for September 3, 2024 at 2:00pm in Dawson County Court.

Daleness was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. Her bond was set at 10% of $100,000 and preliminary hearing set for September 3, 2024 at 2:00pm in Dawson County Court.

Jordan Nicewonger, age 29 of rural Lexington, was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest. His bond was set at 10% of $10,000 and preliminary hearing scheduled for September 3, 2024 at 2:00pm in Dawson County Court.
