SUMNER – It will be back to back years that the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller boys basketball team will be playing at the state basketball tournament. A big defensive fourth quarter by the Mustangs, propelled them past Lawrence Nelson 46-40 Saturday for the D2-3 District Final.

Two separate quarters swung the game in each teams favor. After a tied first quarter, Lawrence Nelson stymied the SEM offense while seemingly making all of their high percentage shots. The Raiders would outscore the Mustangs 13-6 to take a seven point lead into the locker room. Lawrence Nelson would continue making shots early in the third quarter, eventually grabbing a 12 point advantage. SEM had an answer. Chance Daake scored 11 points in the quarter to eventually wipe away the double digit deficit. The Mustangs would build off that momentum in the fourth and shut down Lawrence Nelson. SEM’s physical defense would hold the Raiders to only five points in the final quarter while they managed to put up 11 points, enough to punch their ticket to Lincoln.

Jace Rosentreader led SEM with 15 points and went 5-8 from the free throw line. Daake finished with 14 points. SEM converted 9-14 from the free throw line and coughed up the ball eight times. In the loss Bayln Bargen led Lawrence Nelson with 13 points and went 5-6 from the charity stripe. Nolan Ostdiek scored eight points. The Raiders finished with 13 turnovers.

SEM qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year while Lawrence Nelson finished the year 14-11.
