Holdrege, Neb. – The Phelps County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to use extreme caution after a number of individuals have received phone calls that appeared to be from the sheriff’s office number on Thursday. The caller states they are with immigration and will ask for personal information. The usual action for those who are suspicious is to hang up and call the sheriff’s office back to verify the call. However, the hoax continues as that call is directed right back to the scammers.
The Phelps County Sheriff’s Office wants to “ensure the public’s safety and prevent any potentional scams or fraudulent activity.” If anyone receives one of these calls, they recommend using a different phone to call their office or to wait a little bit before calling back. This will make it possible to get a hold of the sheriff’s office legitimately.
Their official statement is to exercise caution. The Phelps County Sheriff’s office says to, “Remember, we will never call you to demand money over the phone to resolve a warrant or debt.” They urge residents to always be cautious of any unsolicited requests for payment or personal information regarding dates of birth, social security numbers, bank account numbers, insurance information, family member’s personal information, or other personal financial information.
If anyone receives this type of phone call or feels the call may be suspicious, contact the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office at 308-995-5692. Use a different phone than the one that was used to answer the suspicious call, if possible. If no other phone is available, call a different number first before calling the sheriff’s office.
