Ben Sasse has announced he is stepping down as President of the University of Florida. In an X post he noted his wife Melissa, suffered an aneurysm and series of strokes in 2007. He said his wife made an “incredible comeback” at the time. But, in recent months, she’s has been diagnosed with epilepsy and has been struggling with a new batch of memory issues.

Sasses says “Gator Nation needs a president who can keep charging hard”, his wife “deserves a husband who can pull his weight” and their kids need a dad who can be home many more nights.

Sasse says his family will be staying in Gainsville and he’ll become President Emeritus and professor, continuing to teach classes while remaining involved in serving University of Florida students past, present, and future.

Sasse was born in Plainview, Nebraska. He served as a United States senator from Nebraska from 2015 to 2023. He also previously served as President of Midland University in Fremont.
