SARGENT – A sixth grade teacher at Sargent Public Schools was recently honored with the University of Nebraska Athletic Department’s Touchdown for Teachers Award.

According to Husker Athletics, Touchdown for Teachers recognizes teachers who have gone above and beyond to support their students and improve communities across Nebraska.

Tami Phillipps was one of five teachers chosen from more than 800 submissions across the state. She was surprised with the news during a school assembly on April 5.

Phillipps was nominated by one of her students, who submitted an essay describing her impact and why she deserves to be recognized.

She has taught in Sargent for 17 years and is also the head volleyball coach. She said her students continue to be her favorite part of the job.

Phillipps will be recognized at the Nebraska football spring game and each of her students will also receive a ticket along with a parent or guardian.

The spring game will be Saturday, April 27 at Memorial Stadium with kickoff at 11 a.m.
