Judy Ridenour of Mullen, Nebraska, was named the 2024 NRD Director of the Year at the Nebraska Resources Districts’ annual conference in Kearney.

Ridenour has been a dedicated member of the Upper Loup NRD Board since 1990. Over the past 34 years, she has passionately contributed to conservation efforts both as a board member and producer. She has implemented conservation practices on her own property, served in various leadership roles, and actively participated in committees and conferences.

A rancher herself, Ridenour says she got involved with the NRD to improve her family’s operation.

“I was concerned about my own ranch and what I needed to do to improve it and save our resources,” she said.

Ridenour’s commitment to natural resources conservation and her progressive approach have greatly benefited the Upper Loup NRD and the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts. She was appointed as the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts delegate in 2004 and has served on the Native Vegetation and Forestry Committee for 20 years.

Over the years, she has become known for her thoughtful and heartfelt invocations delivered at NRD luncheons and events. Her first invocation included the poem “Advice from a Tree.” Since then, she has dedicated significant time to researching and crafting meaningful messages for the group.

Ridenour is the first person to receive Director of the Year honors twice, having won the award for the first time in 2012. Since she chose not to file for re-election, she will officially retire from NRD service in January after 34 years of service to the Upper Loup NRD and 20 years of service to the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts.

As she steps away, she encourages others to get involved with their local NRDs.

“Step forward and you will be welcomed,” said Ridenour. “It will be a gratifying and educational experience.”
