Power gradually restored to North Platte following damaging thunderstorm winds

North Platte, Neb. — Thunderstorms packing winds in excess of 80 mph knocked out power for much of North Platte on Sunday night. Assessment of the damage and cleanup is underway and will be ongoing. A strong line of storms swept through Nebraska on Sunday into early Monday causing very high winds, including a 97 mph wind gust four-miles south-southwest of North Platte. Myers says there is a variety of damage around the community, but for now, there are no injuries reported.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in North Platte says survey teams completed an assessment of the ominous-looking cloud formation that formed on the east-side of the community, as part of their overall survey of area storm damage. They say it was a Gustnado. The definition is as follows:

A semi traveling on Interstate-80 was blown over during the storm, but Myers says North Platte Fire Department arrived on scene and determined the driver was uninjured.
