SUTHERLAND, NE – A 16-year-old driver was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte following a car vs. train collision on Saturday afternoon east of Sutherland.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car/train crash reported at about 4 p.m. on Saturday. According to a news release from the LCSO, the accident was reported to have happened at O Fallon’s Crossing, located about one mile east of Sutherland.

It was reported there was an eastbound train stopped on the tracks and the 16-year-old driver of the vehicle did not see the westbound train coming because of the stopped train.

Prior to attempting to cross, two other vehicles ahead of driver crossed the tracks safely so he did not check for a second train.

The vehicle sustained extensive damage after the second train collided with it. The teen driver was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte, and it was determined that his only injury was a concussion.

The Sheriff’s Office says there is no suspicion of drugs or alcohol involved. It is unknown if the teen driver was wearing a seat belt.
