Lincoln, Neb. — 23 people were killed in Nebraska traffic crashes in in April according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT).

A report released this week says the fatalities occurred in 19 fatal crashes, with eleven of the victims not using seat belts, four using a seatbelt, and four had seatbelt usage marked as unknown.

NDOT reported that sixteen of the fatalities occurred in rural areas.

They also said there were six fatalities on the interstate, nine on other highways, and eight on local roads.

The agency reported that one of the fatalities was a pedestrian, while three were motorcyclists.

For comparison, the NDOT says fatalities and fatal crashes for the first four months of 2024 were down 17 percent from last year. That’s based on a total of 68 crashes and 78 deaths in 2024 and 60 fatal crashes and 65 fatalities in 2023.
