Grand Island, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) together with the City of Grand Island and Werner Construction, Inc. hosted a news conference Monday afternoon to break ground on US-30 Grand Island West.

The $33.6 million project will realign Highway 30 for four miles, from just west of Grand Island to Alda. Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele says his community is committing $4 million to the project.

Werner Construction of Hastings is the contractor for the project which is scheduled to be completed by June of 2026.

Participants discussed the construction of the 4-lane expressway and the realignment of existing roads to line up to the proposed US-30 alignment. Officials says the US 30 expansion project marks a new chapter in the
enhancement of Nebraska’s expressway system and reflects NDOT’s commitment to improving safety, connectivity, and economic development across the state.

Officials credit the Build Nebraska Act and the Transportation Innovation Act for making the project possible.

“Thanks to these acts, NDOT has been able to deliver significant improvements that benefit all Nebraskans, beyond just basic maintenance,” said Vicki Kramer, Director, Nebraska Department of Transportation. “We’re committed to building a better, safer and more efficient transportation network for everyone.”
