Surveillance cameras and thermal imaging are being used to monitor the animals

Beaver City, Neb. — An adult mountain lion and cubs were sighted in northwest Beaver City according to the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office said measures have been taken to ensure the safety of residents by contacting the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission and an area federal trapper.

People who see the animal are urged not to approach and to call the Sheriff’s Office at 308-268-2245 or 911 to let authorities know its location.

People are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings if walking or involed in other outdoor activities and they are encouraged to keep pets and children within sight.

The Sheriff’s Office has placed several trail cameras around Beaver City near reported sightings and will have personnel randomly using thermal imaging in and around town to monitor various areas as well as have a deputy posted in town for a few days for a quick response.

They remind residents that only law enforcement, including Sheriff’s Office deputies or Game & Parks personnel are authorized to dispatch the animal with certain criteria being met. A person with relevant information or a sighting needs to contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately.

The Furnas County Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated information as it becomes available.
