Lexington, Neb. — The mother a baby who died last week waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning during an appearance in Dawson County Court.

19-year-old Jasmine Hopkins has been charged with one count of felony child abuse in the death of her 3 month old son, Carson Haynes, who died shortly before 5 a.m., Thursday, March 7, at Children’s Hospital in Omaha after life support was ended. The court had granted Hopkins’ motion for a furlough from the Dawson County Jail to be at the hospital for removal of Carson’s life support.

Against objections by the state, bond for Jasmine Hopkins was reduced from $500,000 to $250,000, 10- percent surety, at the request of her attorney.

Dawson County Judge Jeff Wightman ordered that Hopkins’ case be bound over to District Court and set her arraignment for April 15 at 9:30 a.m.

Carson’s father, 23-year-old Draven Haynes, has been charged with two counts of felony child abuse. He is being held on a $1 Million bond. Haynes waived his preliminary hearing and will appear for arraignment in Dawson County District Court on April 1 at 9:30am.

Cozad Police Department responded on Wednesday, February 14, to the 200 block of Avenue A in reference to an unresponsive two-month-old. When officers arrived, they say Haynes told them the infant was on a bed when the infant rolled off it.

The affidavit says Cozad Rescue staff advised officers that the infant went into cardiac arrest and had to be placed on a breathing machine. A CT scan was later performed on the infant, who was found to have brain bleeding, broken ribs and burn marks. The infant was later transported to Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
