Lexington, Neb. — Local mail carriers will be picking up food donations as they deliver mail Saturday, May 13, for the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) 31st annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery. Lexington Postmaster Leta Zimbelman has a couple of tips…

Paraphrase of response: “We suggest that they put it in a plastic bag just because its easier for the carriers to grab and to carry…and least amount of them to tear through the plastic sack…and anything with cans or boxes…make sure that they’re not expired (the food) preferably no glass (no glass jars) that is harder for the carriers if they would drop it, it would break. They just prefer not to have jars.”

Zimbelman says they also welcome residents who bring their food donations to the Lexington Post Office before Saturday and drop it off with a postal employee at the counter or leave it on the loading dock at the back of the post office. All food donations will go to the local food pantry.

Good items to donate include canned fruits & vegetables, canned tuna or chicken, oatmeal, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, pasta meals and sauces, hearty meaty canned soups and macaroni & cheese. For more information, go to nalc.org/food
