Lopers Win MIAA Title

The University of Nebraska at Kearney captured the program’s first MIAA Women’s Basktball Championship Tournament title with a 57-51 victory over Fort Hays State on Sunday at Gross Memorial Coliseum. This year’s championship tournament was presented by Citizens Bank & Trust. The Lopers held a 29-18 lead at the break and held on for the six point victory.

The tournament’s Most Outstanding Player was Brooke Carlson from UNK, who scored 18 points on Sunday with seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Haley Simental, scored 14 points and Elisa Backes had eight. Both joined Carlson on the MIAA All-Tournament Team.

For the Tigers, All-Tournament Selection Jaden Hobbs scored 14 points wiht four assists and two steals. Katie Wagner had 13 points and six rebounds. Olivia Hollenbeck had four points and joined Hobbs as an All-Tournament selection.

The Central Regional will be on March 12-15, in Warrensburg, Mo., at the University of Central Missouri. UNK is the 2nd seed in the tournament and will play on Saturday vs either Minnesota-Duluth or Emporia State.
