COZAD – The Lexington Minutemaids spoiled the opening night of the new Cozad High School Gymnasium, sweeping the Haymakers 27-25, 25-21, 25-14 Tuesday night.

The first two sets were competitive as both teams traded leads and neither team lead by anything larger than five points. Despite winning the first two sets, Lexington had to earn the victories as Cozad would either rally from deficits or force the Minutemaids to earn every point. However, the third set saw Lexington dominate from start to finish. A virtually clean third frame, solid defense and an aggressive offense from the Minutemaids allowed them to cruise to the victory.

Lexington used a balanced offensive attack, led by Josslyn Mins’ eight kills and two ace serves. Sydney Reutlinger-Maravilla added seven kills while Hannah Scharff finished with six kills and five blocks. The Minutemaids finished with seven service errors. Cozad couldn’t overcome their own errors and struggled at the service line, finishing 11 service errors. Emersyn Propp led the Haymakers with eight kills, two ace serves and four blocks. Braelyn Mallcom had six kills and two ace serves.

Lexington improved to 1-1 and will travel to Minden on Thursday. Cozad dropped to 0-2 and will visit Southern Valley Thursday.
